Our First Journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first FLCA-Guatemala took place in Fall 2019, when students from the Journalism \u2013 Mass Media were invited to create stories about the work of Students Offering Support, a Canadian NGO, in Guatemala. They also delivered Digital Storytelling Workshops to students at Ni\u00f1os de Guatemala in Antigua, Guatemala, as well as in the small, rural community of Chuinatajuyulup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Documenting Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, the program was expanded to include students in the Video Production program as well, and the team traveled to Aquil Grande and Las Arrugas for the first time. This time, the team also told the story of a water filtration system developed and implemented by engineering students from the University of Toronto who traveled with the DC students. DC students also told the stories of SOS\u2019s impact on the local community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Reflection & Appreciation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the onset of the pandemic, the project shifted to an online model. Students at Durham College provided the same Digital Storytelling Workshops via Zoom with students in Las Arrugas. When travel resumed, we grew the project to include a virtual component in the fall, with an in-person trip in the winter.

Together, the Canadian and Guatemalan students created stories that shared the impacts of climate change, poverty, gender inequality, and poor education on Guatemalan communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
